So I know this is probably the unpopular opinion overall, but was anyone else upset over how they chose to end season 1 of Korra? This journal does contain spoilers so if you haven't seen it, leave now.

So there were several things that really bugged me.

1. Korra unlocking her airbending abilities actually didn't bug me at all. What did bug me is how novice airbending defeated Amon. He's an accomplished bloodbender and skilled bender overall. I mean... what the hell?

2. They never even bothered explaining how Amon and his brother were able to bloodbend without a full moon. If you're going to throw something that huge into the story, at least explain it.

3. Amon's character was completely undermined in this episode. Both politically and ethically. I found his stance on bending fascinating throughout the whole series and then it's revealed that he's just a hypocrite? And absolutely no reason as to why he's trying to take everyone else's bending when he's a bender himself? Huh?

4. And this is probably the biggest complaint of all: Korra getting her bending back after five minutes of losing her powers. I remember when she lost her powers I was thinking, "Holy shit this is some amazing writing. I can't wait to see season 2 and how she develops as a character!!" and then she gets her powers back 5 minutes later..... there was so much potential character development and story there and they just decided to go out like that? Ugh..

5. Korra already having the ability to restore everyone's bending. Just... /sigh. No explanation needed here.

I just feel like the last few minutes was a huge cop-out. There's people saying "Ohh well it was meant to be a stand alone season cause they didn't know it would get anymore after that!" Please just spare me. It was obvious since the day it was announced how huge of a success it was going to be. It had huge hype since day 1, how would it not get a second season? :| Perfect set-up ruined.

Anyway, that's just my little rant. I was majorly disappointed with the end.

Anyone know when season 1 would be released on DVD?

I agree. The episode was extremely cluttered and rushed. I admit that I was one of the people saying "Oh they didn't know that they would get a second season." However, after thinking about it a little more, that isn't a good excuse for it to be so....bad. I mean, and this is just my opinion, even if it were to end with a cliff hanger (provided they didn't get the green light for a second season) I would like to think that fan outreach would have been so great that they would have gotten a second (and maybe even a third ^_^ ) season to accompany this one. Of course, I am being idealistic right now.

Back to the episode at hand, I agree with every point that you have listed. However I'd like to add one more thing to your list. The romance factor between Korra and Mako. I know that they were "destined" from the beginning and all, but everything just felt so....weird? I mean I would have been fine if they ended with them getting together (or her with anyone/no one) but the love scenes just felt like they were stuck in there for the sake of having them there. Though this was something that felt "off" to me since the series first introduced the possibility of "Makorra" (are those right?). Ugh, my personal gripes aside.

To sum everything up (and before I go off on a tangent on my likes/dislikes of this series ^_^) , I completely agree with you. She should have lost her powers and began training to regain them for the second season (whether they were green-lit for another season or not). I would have also liked to see the benders live as non benders (just to see how they adapt to it at least). Amon, was an awesome villain, until the last episode. I also can't believe how we're supposed to believe that his brother (whose name escapes me for some reason....) who has been basically screaming "I'm going to go corrupt/evil" suddenly has a change of heart after being held hostage by his brother? Another quirk that I just remembered, this episode he said that he had just learned Amon was his brother, but like 1 or 2 episodes earlier he had a knee-jerk reaction to being compared to Amon (As if he already knew?).

Darn, went off on a tangent, my apologies. To close, in my opinion, a series with a good cliffhanger is better than one with a bad ending (though that is just my opinion of course and I hope that it in no way is offensive).

completely agrees. its was such a waste...I was hoping she'd have to start over and regain everything again. I hope season two has something to offer.

My two cents.

Honestly, I only agree with 4 and 5. Those felt like a big deus ex machina to me, and wraped things up a little too neatly. From what I heard, the writers didn't know they'd have another season when they wrote it. I bet if they did, it would play out differently.

For the first point, I don't think it was the 'airbending' itself that got him. It was her catching Amon completely off guard by still being able to bend (despite being cleansed), breaking his hold, and having a well placed multistory window behind him. So lucky shot basically :P. You could argue that he had no experience in blocking air-bending too.

The second point is explained in the story as genetic. Sure it's a weak explanation, but it's not like avatar hasn't pulled new rule-violating abilities before (hello metal and energy bending). Legend of Korra itself seems to hint that bending has been getting stronger, and more evolved in general. e.g look at all the lightning and metal benders around? Something unheard of before. If nothing else, it's something that could be touched upon next season.

The third point just sounds like complaining that he's not what you thought he was. Its not like his deception wasn't incredibly foreshadowed. I still think he's an interesting character who did believe his own rhetoric at least as far as bending in general is concerned, and he DOES still have a reason for it (believing bending is the root of all evil.). He was just too pragmatic not to use his gift when needed. Amon's still a hypocrite, but he doesn't lose any depth of character for it. I do think it was a waste how they offed him though, even if it was a fitting end.

Yeah. I have no need to find any reason to complain. It's just my opinion that they took a really complex character and did that to him. I don't WANT to complain because I loved the rest of the series so much.

Understandable. I can certainly agree with the sentiment, as I have my own opinions and nitpicks too about the show too (mostly regarding the brothers). It's good to have it out of your system.

I think most of the issues stem to how short the season was. Who knows, maybe some of these will be addressed in future seasons.

I'm the opposite to tell you the truth. I loved it. I felt like it could have been drawn out for sure, but I feel like it was necessary in total. The avatar always had the ability to restore and take abilities, but because she was never able to talk to Aang, she was unable to access that power. The only thing she was missing was her spirituality. The brush with Amon was the motivator she needed to finally reach out into her spirituality like Aang said when he arrived. It's when you hit your lowest that you make the connection. Korra lost everything that she was supposed to be, so she was left with nothing. Aang made his connection when he ran away from his responsibilities and nearly died in that storm. Korra had the ability because Aang had the ability. They are the same person after all. Korra beat Amon with a surprise attack, not with skill unfortunately. Much like Tensen did when Korra released him at the rally earlier. Amon and his brother could bend without the help of the full moon due to skill learned from their father and the power of their bloodline. The stronger the bloodbender, then they can actually blood bend away from the full moon. I cite the training sessions Amon had with his father. They started only at the full moon until they were strong enough blood benders to try it in the day. ^^ You're just over thinking it mate.

Ok, well that's your opinion. I don't think I'm overthinking anything. I've gone to college for story-telling and the end was just bad story-telling in my opinion.

And that's your opinion. ^^ I can agree with that point. It was rather rushed and cluttered at the end. Bad storytelling indeed but they covered it well I think. They kind of ran themselves into a corner with the abilities of the avatar and Amon I believe. It's probably why they chose the road they did.

I know it's my opinion. The difference is I didn't undermine your opinion by saying "Oh you're just over-analyzing".
